The World Trade Center

A World Trade Center is a recognizable symbol of locally focused economic strength in world commerce. Anchored by a unique combination of tenants and visitors, a World Trade Center is bustling hub of export activity. Membership requirements and cost vary according to the World Trade Center.

 

KWTC Internship Program

The Kentucky World Trade Center (KWTC) Lexington & Louisville offices offer two types of non-paid student internship positions during the fall, spring and summer semesters: a trade research internship and a events planning or marketing internship. College credit is usually available, and encouraged.

What is the Kentucky World Trade Center?

The Kentucky World Trade Center is a non-profit membership organization helping Kentucky companies import, export and establish overseas operations. With offices in Lexington and Louisville, the KWTC offers counseling, market research services, translation assistance, trade education seminars, international events and programs, cross-cultural training, trade missions, and referrals to local international service providers.

"KWTC will facilitate international business and stimulate economic development in Kentucky, through our affiliation with the World Trade Centers Association global network, by offering a one-stop-shop for information, education, technical assistance and networking services that help Kentucky firms succeed in the global market and bring new global business opportunities to the Commonwealth."

The Kentucky World Trade Center is affiliated with the World Trade Centers Association in New York (www.wtca.org), which administers nearly 300 World Trade Centers in close to 100 countries.

 

Trade Research Internship

The KWTC Trade Research Internship provides students with an opportunity to gain valuable knowledge about how to research international markets and trade issues. This internship is excellent preparation for careers in import/export, international sales & marketing and a host of related fields.

Time: 2 days per week; 16 hours

Hourly Rate: Unpaid; Course Credit Offered; Parking provided

Job Description:

International Market Research: Research current information on international countries, companies, distributors, trade issues, regulations, and procedures to fulfill research requests of international member firms. This research includes use of the Internet and communication with overseas trade organizations.

Special Projects: Typical projects include international trade conferences, the annual World Trade Day event in June, cross-cultural training seminars, and in-depth foreign market studies.

Administrative Tasks: Interns often help draft letters, compose and send faxes, and run errands as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong personal and career interest in international commerce.
  • Related course work in international affairs and/or business.
  • Skills: Internet, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, research, writing, interpersonal, analytical.
  • A second language is preferred, especially Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic or Mandarin Chinese.
  • Junior, senior, or graduate/professional school status.

Events Planning/Marketing Internships

The KWTC Events Planning/Marketing Internships provide students with an opportunity to gain valuable knowledge about how to market and sell trade services, sponsorships and events. This internship is excellent preparation for careers in sales & marketing, international trade, and a host of related fields.

Time: 1- 2 days per week, 8-16 hrs.

Hourly Rate: Unpaid; Course Credit Offered; Parking provided

Job Description:

  • Work with Trade Representative on recruiting new members, servicing existing members, and marketing various programs and services.
  • Monitor publications for prospect names and data.
  • Telephone members and prospects to market events, programs, and services.
  • Assist with the organization, marketing, and administration of seminars and special events.
  • Take appropriate initiatives to assure success of programs in process.

Qualifications:

  • Junior or higher class standing.
  • Good telephone, writing, and office skills in English; second language a plus.
  • Relevant course work, including marketing, international marketing, economics, communications, and/or public administration.
  • Strong personal and career interest in sales, marketing or international.
  • Computer skills (PC): word processing, powerpoint, excel, database.
  • Sales and telemarketing interests preferred.
  • Self-starter
